An overview of the safety, clinical application and antiviral research of a novel repurposed therapeutic for the Omicron (B.1.1.529) COVID-19 variant

Since a novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak in late December 2019, coronavirus disease -19 (COVID-19) epidemic has gradually spread worldwide, becoming a major public health event. In November 2021, the Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant was seen in various undervaccinated countries. No specific antiviral therapeutics are currently available for COVID-19 caused by this variant. The treatments for COVID-19 were mainly based on the experiences of similar virus such SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, HIV and influenza viruses. Scientists have taken great efforts to investigate the effective methods for the treatment of COVID-19. In this article, we review a novel option for COVID-19 therapy with the repurposing of Macrogol 3350. We systematically reviewed clinical safety, clinical applications and the progress of antiviral research into this therapeutic. This is summarized and compared, hoping to provide a new clinical option for COVID-19 treatment due to the Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant and inform thought for life-threatening future variants.

For everyone, we believe that having a usual GP or General Practice is central to each person’s care and recommend that people with any health issues that come to the attention of other health professionals should be advised to attend their usual GP or General Practice rather than a specialised service (ie a place not providing the holistic care a specialist GP would).   If  they say that they don’t have a usual GP or general practice, they should be helped to find one and to actually attend it. Call PartridgeGP on 82953200 or make an appointment online here.

Vaccination – the best vaccine is the one in your arm

We all know about COVID. Let’s move on. Let’s move forward. The best vaccination for you is the one in your arm! This is voluntary. It’s not mandatory. If you don’t want it, or don’t think you need it, Australia is a free country. If you do want it, here is some simple information.

There are two vaccines available at the moment – Astra Zeneca, a viral vector vaccine, and Pfizer, an mRNA vaccine. Australia has a lot of Astra Zeneca and less Pfizer. PartridgeGP has Astra Zeneca.

Astra Zeneca:

Viral vector vaccine

2 doses

4-12 weeks apart (12 probably best BUT sooner is better – see above, the best vaccine is the one in your arm)

Clotting risk (low – probably less than 1 in 30000 and dropping as we exclude those at higher risk)

Generally well tolerated (over 20 million doses so far)

Get ASTRA here!

Now, many of you will want the Pfizer vaccine – this has been touted in the media extensively BUT

  • its less available, remember, the vaccine that works best is the one in your arm
  • speed is of the essence, you can see how fast lockdowns can occur
  • it has side effects, but, like Astra Zeneca, they are rare
  • its probably the same effectiveness as Astra Zeneca in the real world

GET PFIZER here!

England won’t win; but PartridgeGPs new PM will

Dr Nick Tellis was born in England. While I was born long after 1966, and moved to Australia many decades after 1966, everyone born in England knows the significance of that year. It’s the last time England won an international football tournament. They say past performance doesn’t predict future performance, but after 55 years, I think it might offer a pointer.

So, my prediction for this weekend’s Euro 2020 final? Italy will win.

My prediction for PartridgeGP is that we will be interviewing some awesome candidates for the position of Practice Manager over the next 2 weeks. Get in it to win it and apply here if you think you have what it takes. Don’t wait 55 years!

Why PartridgeGP doesn’t bulk bill everyone

Many people are concerned about the rising costs of living. One of those costs can be the cost of medical care. Often, but not always, cost and value align (so something that costs more is worth more and is of higher quality, and vice versa).

General Practice in Australia is both efficient and excellent with nearly 90% of Australians seeing a GP at least once a year and this delivering world leading outcomes at a good price. Still, the Medicare Rebate for patients has not kept up with the rising costs of providing medical care and running a medical practice and so out of pocket costs have gone up for patients.

Dr Kris Eliza says it well:

Touchy subject, but this is why I don’t bulk bill. This is why GPs charge money.

This is what your fee goes towards.

Reception, admin, nursing, cleaning, and other staff are paid by our income.

Medical equipment, business requirements and expenses, training, insurance,

registration fees, professional memberships,

rental costs, electricity, internet, telephones,SMS, IT, security, accreditation…

Let’s say we privately bill you for 15 minutes. The business gets $34 to cover all

of the above. If we bulk bill you, the business gets $15.

If we bulk bill, the business’s best interest is for us to see more people per hour.

Hence, 7 minute medicine.

The cost of being a doctor is high.

Unlike some other specialists, GPs do not get annual, sick, maternity/paternity,

or professional development leave.

We aren’t paid for time not seeing patients,

so every call from an allied health professional, every pharmacist,

every other specialist – it’s unpaid work.

I’m not money hungry. I do think that I get fairly compensated for my work

when I don’t bulk bill.

But this is why we can’t “just do things” in our “spare time” at work.

This is why we, as a collective, are frustrated by the Medicare Squeeze.

General Practice is sometimes (not always) considered “lazy”. The “easy specialty”.

The “back up plan”

The general population don’t see us as specialists, like they do a cardiologist

or endocrinologist or gynaecologist.

The general population don’t want to pay for our services.

It’s so demoralising to put your heart and soul into a job that no one wants to value.

Patients Medicare rebates are set by politicians, an increasing number of whom are lawyers. Lawyers often point to pro bono services they provide for the poor and disadvantaged and here we come to the first thing you probably didn’t know:

“Pro bono” comes from the Latin phrase “pro bono publico” which means “for the public good”. In the legal context it generally means the provision of legal services on a free or significantly reduced fee basis.

Now for the second thing you probably didn’t know:

Almost every GP in Australia is providing pro bono work on a daily basis when they bulk bill patients.

The patients Medicare rebate, which a GP accepts as full payment for professional services if bulk billing, is less than half the recommended professional fee for most GP services.

An election is coming. Let your politician know that your health shouldn’t depend on pro bono work from your GP.

It’s your Medicare Rebate.

Blink

PartridgeGP is all about providing the best services and facilities to GPs, allied health professionals, and our staff, so we can serve our valued patients better. Anthony Prigent is not one of our patients but he has a story to tell as a patient, a survivor, and a man. He wrote a book…

Review
In the blink of an eye
Anthony Prigent

History is written by the winners, as the saying goes, but more accurately by the survivors. All of us have done things that could have gone bad. Sometimes there has been a near miss, as when I helped build a retaining wall and witnessed a truck tip rebar straight past a man’s head. Sometimes there has been an accident with no lasting harm. Some automotive adventures come to mind. Sadly, sometimes there is an accident and it doesn’t miss. There is no survivor and no learning. It is rare then to have an accident, for it not to miss, and for there to be a survivor. Rarer still for them to thrive and rarer again for them to learn and write a book. Such is history written and so do we learn everything can change in the blink of an eye.

Spoiler alert was a big phrase in 2019 when the only plagues were on the Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. Anthony has the big reveal pretty early on after setting the scene and anyone who has met him couldn’t fail to be aware of how things turned out. He had a workplace accident, a tragedy in the true sense of the word. You can see it coming but it’s no less shocking when it happens.

It’s a very Aussie, very personal book. There’s butcher talk, there’s beers, tears, strippers, and pool. Then travel, fights, music, and women. Then more travel, more beers, and more women. We get to know Anthony through the book as he finds himself and gets to where he is now. It’s not all beer and women, but you’ll need to read his book to fill in the blanks.

I enjoyed this book. Anthony’s a good genuine bloke and his voice shines through on every page. I look forward to hearing his musical talents and facing him over a beer and a pool table. In a year when many lost a bit and all of us needed some perspective, ‘In the Blink of an Eye’ has something to teach us all. Get it, get on it, read it, digest it, learn from it. As Charles Swindoll said, and Anthony Prigent lives, life is ten per cent what happens to us and ninety per cent how we react to it; we are in charge of our attitudes.

Read the book!
