PartridgeGP has been providing safe services and facilities to our GPs, staff, allied health professionals and patients since the start of the pandemic. We led the way in using the phone – quick, easy, and effective – to achieve this. The Government eventually came to the party with some specific item numbers to rebate patients for the time spent with their specialist GPs. However, as the pandemic ramps up, and the Delta Variant causes lockdowns and restrictions nationwide, what does the government do?

Yes, you are correct. They have changed ALL of the item numbers, rewarding shorter consults, reducing rebates, and preferring video – which patients and GPs have declared by their choices over the last year that they don’t want. Here is a short video explaining what they have done:

They have developed a helpful 13 page document – of course there is no mention of the value of these rebates to the patient, and no explanatory notes to help GPs explain the insurers rules to patients – one day before these changes go live.

Au Revoir Mrs Jen Riches and Net Psychology

PartridgeGP is heading into the new financial year with plenty of plans! We are absolutely committed to helping our patients, our community, and the doctors and allied health professionals we serve. We saw in 2020 that the only constant was change – and so it is in 2021. Firstly, we are saying au revoir to the awesome Mrs Jen Riches of Net Psychology, whose partner has been promoted interstate. We, and our patients, have really appreciated Jen’s care, professional skill, and great energy. Jen is a registered psychologist experienced in providing services to adolescents and adults. She has worked with individuals experiencing a range of life issues such as relationship and family breakdowns, bullying, unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse, grief and loss, social isolation and legal issues. She works with people experiencing a range of complex mental health issues including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and psychosis. She has experience in providing psychology services to clients through secure online video conferencing and face to face. Aside from her private practice experience Jen has worked at Headspace, Lifeline, and MATES in Construction. Jen is passionate about providing professional, down to earth and practical psychology services. 

Jen draws on a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Schema Therapy. Jen brings empathy, warmth and compassion to therapy and takes an individualised approach to each client. See and hear her here!

Happy Monday! The government has listened and telehealth has been extended.

Nothing I wrote earlier has changed.

The past 18 months have brought us much change. Some has been good; some not so good. Working from home has moved from code for ‘about to be sacked’ to the distributed workforce v1.0. All professions have learned to work through the pandemic. GPs are no exception. Telehealth has been our main tool for this.

We have always had the ability to do a lot of our work via the phone – but the funding model has never aligned with this. The friction of taking payment and the rules of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) have combined to force sick patients into waiting rooms, driving from their homes, to spread their bugs…just to get their insurance rebate for medical services.

PartridgeGP was in the vanguard of telehealth adoption, drawing upon our experience from rural and hospital work providing services by phone. Phone is where it’s at. We have Zoom, we have fancy teleconference abilities, but ill patients, the elderly, and those not blessed with fantastic IT and internet just want the phone. We are here to serve.

TELEHEALTH MEDICARE REBATES EXTENDED UNTIL 30 JUNE 2021 ONLY

This is neither a fair shake of the sauce bottle nor does it cut the mustard.

1. The Medicare rebate is the patient’s rebate. In dripfeeding these rebates uncertainly, the government (the insurer) is NOT listening to the people.

2. The pandemic is still here. We are insulated in Australia by distance and wealth, with vaccines to come. This has not stopped State Governments across the country calling lockdowns on short notice. Lockdowns mandate telehealth. Lack of access to routine medical care is a timebomb.

3. Australia needs certainty to move forward. Constantly changing the rules is not leadership. We can’t stride forward on shifting ground.

4. Many telehealth services have been instead of, not as well as, face to face consults. Therefore they have been largely cost neutral – in a time where government services and public servants have not lost a cent.

TELEHEALTH MEDICARE REBATES WILL END ON 31 MARCH 2021!

The AMA has written to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who is the acting Health Minister, calling on the Federal Government to extend until the end of the year temporary telehealth arrangements under Medicare that have supported patients to have a consultation with their doctor either over the phone or by video. 

These arrangements, which were put in place as part of the Government’s COVID-19 response and further extended last year, will end on 31 March if not extended. 

“The current uncertainty over the future of temporary COVID-19 Medicare telehealth items means that patients and practices can’t plan consultations beyond the end of this month, even though we are still in the middle of the pandemic,” AMA President, Dr Omar Khorshid, said.

We can’t help our patients if we are ill.

There may be solutions. One, from Dr Todd Cameron and Dr Sachin B Patel, is outlined in the following videos.

Where can you apply your time and skills to make a change?

Here it is.

Join the AMA.

They have about 6000 GP members (my guesstimate). You can join for a monthly fee of somewhere between $15-130 a month as a GP or registrar. You don’t have to join the AMA – it is entirely voluntary. You can leave at any time, and take your money with you.

So join.

On your application, quite clearly state why you are joining and that this is THE thing you would like the AMA to make an impact on. The AMA have access to the politicians. From your membership to their ears.
